The following transcription is from Mrs. Irish's obiturary, published in 1919. The newspaper clipping did not include from which paper it was published, however it is possibly from the Onawa Democrat since the clipping was from the Onawa Public Library.
Old Resident Is Gone. Mrs. Amanda Irish, Who Came Here in Early Days, Died Last Friday.
Last Friday, December 12, one of Whiting's early settlers passed away. After a very brief illness of pneumonia, Mrs. Amanda Irish passed to her reward in the better life. For twenty-five years, Mrs. Irish has been a constant, but patient sufferer. She was in her seventy-fifth year and the Sunday prior to her death had walked over to see Mrs. Kesterson.
She came to Whiting by stage coach. No railroad traversed this section of the country when she came with her husband to fight the fight of a pioneer in Whiting's early days. Though living two miles from the track, she helped to board the men who laid the road from Omaha to Sioux City. Mrs. Irish was born at Cameron, Missouri on February 26, 1845. Here she lived until 1865 when she was united in marriage to Jerome Irish, after which she joined her husband on a farm two miles northwest of Whiting. To Mr. and Mrs. Irish were born six children, one of who died in infancy. However, when the oldest was only eleven years old, and the youngest ten months, Mr. Irish passed away. This left a severe struggle for Mrs. Irish, but with a persistent, untiring courage she faced her task. Today, each of the five remains to mourn the loss of a faithful, devoted mother. They are Mrs. H J Stephenson of Fairfield, Neb, Miss Dora Irish and Tom, James, and Frank Irish of Whiting. Mrs. Irish also leaves a brother, Mr. Wilson McBeath of this place, to mourn her departure.
The deceased had been a member of the Whiting Methodist Church since she was forty five years of age. Though poor in health, the Church always had the support of her prescence and means. The funeral services were held in the home last Sunday afternoon under the direction of Rev. Geo. F. Barsalou and Rev. Geo. F. Donn. Burial was at the Whiting Cemetery. |
