||Delane W. Torticill, 60, of Onawa passed away August 22, 2012 at his residence following a courageous battle with throat cancer.|
Delane William was born October 14, 1951 in Onawa, the son of William Edward and Rosalie Ruth (Irish) Torticill. He was baptized in St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa. He graduated from West Monona High School.
Delane enlisted in the United States Army in 1970, and served in the Vietnam War for thirteen months. He saw much combat, and was captured in Laos. During this time, he received the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Expert in Rifle Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1972.
Delane and Frankie Raymond were united in marriage on December 31, 1975 in Onawa. They were together until her death on October 5, 2004.
Upon returning to this area, he attended Western Iowa Tech Community College where he received an auto body degree. He then worked in sales for MTA, a truck driving school, and for Service One Sales selling appliance warranties. After a number of years, he became a self-employed man by owning a trailer court and storage units in Onawa and by farming his forty-four acres of land.
Delane loved tinkering with various projects and was always working on a new invention. He was fascinated by motors and spent a lot of time with his remote controlled airplanes, restoring vintage cars, and working on his houseboat. His greatest joys in life were his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Frank (Tami) Torticill of Kansas City, MO and Travis (Charity) Torticill of Onawa; four grandchildren, Frank "Casey," Gage, Trenten, and Gentrie; his mother, Rosalie Torticill of Onawa; five sisters, Diann Writer of Vallejo, CA, Debby Torticill of Richmond, CA; Dannette (Mark) Eveloff of Council Bluffs, IA; Denise (Steve) Struble of Sheldon, IA, and Doreen (Kevin) Heisterkamp of Storm Lake, IA; and two brothers, Dennis Torticill of San Marcos, TX and David Torticill of Onawa.
