He went to California in 1852 and established a hotel, first in Santa Clara County and then after being joined by his wife and one child, who also came by mule back via the Isthmus of Panama, they established a hotel in the mining country at Wisconsin Hill in the Sierra's which they conducted for a number of years. [In a note concerning the Stephen Irish family as a whole "From the older generations the descendants have always been told that they are direct descendants of the Ethan Allen Family"]
